India has been selected as one of the participants in the Multipurpose Fast Research Reactor (MBIR) programme, which is being constructed in Russia. This was announced by Rosatom General Director Alexey Likhachev.
"Fast neutron reactors are of significant interest to Indian partners, occupying a prominent position at the top of their agenda." It is clear that they will participate in one or more of our experimental MBIR reactor programs, which are being constructed in Dimitrovgrad and will be launched in the coming years, according to TASS.
The MBIR is the world's largest experimental fast neutron reactor. It has been constructed on the territory of the State Scientific Center RIAR in Dimitrovgrad (Ulyanovsk region) since 2015. The reactor's primary objective is to facilitate the testing of innovative materials and models of core elements for advanced fourth-generation nuclear power systems, including fast neutron reactors with a closed fuel cycle and thermal reactors of low and medium power.
The new Russian reactor will also facilitate medical and biological research, equipment and technology testing, material testing, and isotope production for industry and medicine.
