Russia's share of Egypt's wheat imports has increased to 68%, up from just over 55% last year, according to Akram Hossein al-Shafei, a member of the board of the Egyptian Chamber of Commerce and Industry. He told RIA Novosti that Russia and Ukraine account for 80% of Egypt's total wheat imports, amounting to approximately 8 million tons. Last year, imports from the two countries amounted to 5.4 million tons. At the same time, al-Shafei emphasised that Russia is the main supplier of wheat to Egypt.
“Russia’s share in Egyptian wheat imports has grown to 68% – 6.83 million tons, compared to 55.1% of total imports last year,” he said on the sidelines of the international economic forum “Russia - Islamic World: KazanForum”.
The expert added that in the first 10 months of 2023, approximately $2.29 billion worth of wheat was imported from the Russian Federation. Compared to the same period in 2022, the increase was more than $680 million.
Following wheat, said a representative of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry, imports include iron, steel and metal products. Mr. Al-Shafei indicated that Cairo is seeking to reduce the cost of delivering goods from the Russian Federation.
