The US threatens to “tighten the sanctions screws” against the Russian energy sector

Washington will continue to impose sanctions against the Russian energy sector and related infrastructure, according to a statement released by US Deputy Energy Secretary Geoffrey Pyatt on Tuesday.
“We will continue to tighten the screws and continue to impose sanctions on a wide range of companies involved in the development of key energy projects, as well as future energy projects and related infrastructure,” Pyatt said at an energy security conference at the Center for Strategic Initiatives and International Studies (CSIS) in Washington.
He further stated that sanctions will apply to enterprises involved in the procurement of materials and advanced technologies for future energy projects in Russia.
On Monday, the Swedish Foreign Minister, Tobias Billström, announced that EU countries intend to include a ban on Russian LNG supplies in the 14th package of sanctions.
The Russian Federation has previously stated on numerous occasions that the West made a significant error by refusing to purchase hydrocarbons from Russia. This will result in a new, stronger dependence due to higher prices. Moscow has stated that those who refused would still purchase at a higher price through intermediaries and would continue to purchase Russian oil and gas.
