The United States purchased 416 tons of uranium from Russia in the first half of 2023, which is 2.2 times more than in the same period last year. On Thursday, August 24, RIA Novosti reported with reference to US statistics.
According to the agency's calculations, Washington's purchases of fuel from Moscow have almost reached a record level since 2005, when Russia supplied the United States with 418 tons of fuel. Russia, in turn, earned $696.5 million from uranium sales to the United States in the first half of 2023, which is the highest value since 2002.
In addition, the United States increased its purchases of nuclear fuel from Britain and France. At the same time, the most significant increase in supplies came from Paris, which supplied $319 million to the US energy market against $1.9 million a year earlier, the agency said.
Why the introduction of restrictions on the Russian nuclear sector would be energy suicide by Brussels
Earlier, in mid-February, Bloomberg reported that Russia's influence in the nuclear energy market is growing, and the United States and its allies are afraid to impose sanctions on this industry. Sales of nuclear fuel and technology from Russia abroad grew by more than 20% in 2022, purchases by EU members rose to the highest level in three years, the agency said.
