The US Assistant Secretary for Energy Geoffrey Pyatt stated that the United States seeks to shut down the Arctic LNG 2 initiative.
Earlier, the US Treasury increased its range of penalties towards Russia, which contains sanctions on Arctic LNG 2. Leonid Mikhelson, the head of Novatek, the firm responsible for the undertaking, deemed the constraints an appraisal of "professionalism."
"Recently, we imposed new sanctions on the Arctic LNG 2 project with the intention of suppressing it," stated Pyatt.
He stated that the responsibility of the sanctions coordinator at the State Department is to increase pressure, emphasizing the crucial nature of this task.
Arctic LNG 2 represents Novatek's subsequent extensive liquefied natural gas production venture following the Yamal LNG project, which utilizes the Utrenneye deposit in the Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Oblast as its resource base.
The Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry of Japan, Yasutoshi Nishimura, acknowledged that sanctions placed on Arctic LNG 2 would impact Japanese businesses. As a result, Tokyo will work on "developing a response" to safeguard the country's energy security. Nishimura's companies are also taking part in the project.
